There are many pills available in the market and online shopping websites. Most of them have a herbal base like bitter orange, chitosan, chromium, ephedra, hoodia, guar gum, green tea extract, alli, acia berry etc or are sold as concoctions of these. These pills claim to work by reducing appetite, increasing calorie-burn, blocking the absorption of fat or burning it off etc. Though these drugs claim to bring in immediate weight loss, they have to be accompanied with a reduced calorie, low fat diet.
Pill-falls
The numerous number of pills available in the market often puts the consumer into a quandary when it comes to choosing one. Are they really worth their value in money and are they really safe? Many have been known to cause undesirable side-effects like diarrhaea, indigestion, constipation, vomiting and bloating. Some, ephedra for instance, even poses heart risks and strokes and have been banned since.
To top it all, weight loss pills and dietary supplements do not come under the scanner of prescription drugs. Hence, they are often marketed with tall claims based on views with little proof of effectiveness, without the approval of the FDA. Further, their reaction to other medications is unknown.
For effective weight loss, the best and safest way is to reduce calorie intake and to increase physical activity. If you do want to take the pill, then, it is best done under the close supervision of a good doctor. Or else, you might end up being more ill after using the pill.
